HYDERABAD - Dairy companies in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are considering cutting prices of select value-added milk products to pass on the benefit of the recent restructuring of goods and services tax rates, multiple sources told Informist. However, these companies are not considering any cut in regular milk prices since pouched milk is already exempt from GST, a source said.
Heritage Foods Ltd., Dodla Dairy Ltd., and Creamline Dairy Products Ltd., an arm of Godrej Agrovet Ltd. and owner of the Godrej Jersey brand, and several private dairies are evaluating price revisions, sources said.
Godrej Jersey is evaluating a new pricing structure for select value-added products such as paneer, ice cream, and certain categories of flavoured milk, a company source said. The company is expected to take a final decision on the price revision by Monday, the source said.
Similarly, Heritage Foods Ltd. and Dodla Dairy Ltd., which have a significant presence in southern states, including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, will not cut prices of regular milk but may reduce those of some value-added products, a source said. The quantum of the price cut will be finalised in the next 1–2 days, the source said, adding these companies are likely to follow the pricing pattern of Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt. Ltd., an arm of the National Dairy Development Board.
On Tuesday, Mother Dairy announced price cuts in line with the GST relief for select dairy products. Mother Dairy reduced one litre tetra pack milk price by INR 2 to INR 75 and that of 200 grams paneer pack price by INR 3 to INR 92. Mother Dairy also cut price of 500-gram pack of butter by INR 20 to INR 285.
Value-added products where GST has been reduced may get cheaper, the source said, pointing to items such as ghee, cheese, butter, paneer, and ice cream. Godrej Jersey and Heritage Foods together offer over 100 varieties of value-added products, while Dodla Dairy's share of value-added products remains relatively small, the source said.
At 1424 IST, shares of Heritage Foods were 0.3% higher at INR 490 on the National Stock Exchange. Shares of Godrej Agrovet were down marginally at INR 730.90. Dodla Dairy shares were at INR 1431, up 0.5%. End
