NEW DELHI/AHMEDABAD – National Dairy Development Board's wholly owned subsidiary Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt. Ltd. Tuesday announced a cut in prices of select value-added dairy products and processed foods under the Safal brand, effective Sept. 22. This is to pass on 100% benefit of the recent goods and services tax reforms to all applicable products, the company said in a press release.
Dairy major Amul, too, is likely to follow suit in rationalising prices. Jayen Mehta, managing director, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, which markets Amul products, told Informist that they had 828 varieties of milk products and that price changes would be commensurate for the products where GST has been reduced. This would include products as ghee, cheese, butter, paneer and ice-cream. Mehta did not share the quantum of cuts Amul would announce.
With the latest revision of prices, Mother Dairy's entire portfolio will fall either under the exempted or nil, or the lowest slab of 5% GST. The company noted that pouch milk has always been exempted from GST and continues to be so, with no implications on its maximum retail price.
Meanwhile, ultra-high-temperature milk that comes in tetra packs will attract 0% GST starting Sept. 22. Presently, 5% GST is levied on the product category. As a result, the price of a one litre tetra pack of Mother Dairy's toned ultra-high temperature milk will fall by INR 2 to INR 75, starting next week. Amul's Mehta also said prices of ultra-high-temperature milk packs will be slashed to pass on the benefit of GST rate cuts.
In other categories, GST on paneer will be cut to 0% from 5% presently. A 200 gram pack of Mother Dairy's paneer will be cheaper by INR 3 at INR 92 from Sept. 22, the company said. GST on ghee, butter, cheese, and milkshakes will fall to 5% from 12%. Consequently, a 500 gram pack of Mother Dairy's butter will be priced at INR 285, down by INR 20.
Among items under the Safal brand, GST on value-added horticulture products such as frozen snacks, jams, pickles, packaged coconut water, and tomato puree will be reduced to 5% from 12%. End
