--Oil Secy: Plan to increase LNG terminal capacity in Odisha, Gujarat

NEW DELHI - India is expanding the capacities at its liquefied natural gas terminals in Gujarat and Odisha amid increased energy demand, said Pankaj Jain, petroleum and natural gas secretary, at the FT Energy Transition Summit India on Tuesday.

"Our (LNG) capacity has gone up from 21 million metric tonnes to 52.5 million metric tonnes. We're still adding more," Jain said. India also imports LNG from regions including the US, Mozambique, Brazil, and West Asia. Jain said that the government is "striving" to bring gas under the goods and service tax framework so as to enable usage of past credits on future fuel usage.

The Centre is working on using LNG to fuel commercial vehicles but that has been delayed. "I think slowly we're going to get there, because the cost of the vehicles themselves is currently...The economy doesn't work out for a truck operator. So as engineering improves, cost efficiency happens," Jain said. India has also been increasing its compressed biogas capacity. "Many more (compressed biogas) plants are in the offing, where they will be coming on stream in 2026 and 2027," Jain said.

On India's green hydrogen drive, Jain said that some years back, it was difficult to find green hydrogen under $5.50 per kilo. Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. recently awarded a contract for electrolysers where the delivered cost would be just below $4.50 per kilo. "The next tender, which was by another state-owned enterprise, has brought price down below $3.75 a kilo," Jain said. "If we are able to be on this trajectory, we will probably be seeing sub-three numbers very soon," he added.  END
