--Renewable energy minister: Wind energy drive facing location issues
NEW DELHI – As India doubles down on its renewable energy ambitions, the country is pushing policies to bring down the cost of green hydrogen below $2 a kilogram by 2030, Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said at the FT Energy Transition Summit India on Tuesday. "We are confident that India is going to become the green hydrogen hub of the world," Joshi said.
"India has green hydrogen (as a solution) for sectors like steel, cement, fertilisers and heavy transport," Joshi said. India is currently developing dedicated hydrogen hubs at several ports such as Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin.
"We have recently discovered prices of green ammonia at INR 49.75 per kilogram, it is the lowest anywhere in the world," Joshi said. India has currently allocated a production capacity of 862,000 tonnes per annum to 19 companies and awarded a 3 gigawatt annual electrolyser manufacturing capacity of 15 firms.
The Centre has also pressed the pedal on building wind energy capacity. According to Joshi, wind energy capacity in India rose to 53 GW in 2025 from 21 GW around 10 years ago. "There are some issues of locations (with wind energy capacity), we are going to solve that and capacity will increase rapidly," Joshi said.
India has set a target of having a power capacity of 500 GW generated through renewable energy by 2030. India has talked of energy transition in tandem with principles of climate justice, Joshi said. "Those with least historical responsibility for emissions cannot be asked to pay the highest price for the transition," Joshi said. End
