--Govt: India, EU to hold next round of FTA talks Oct 6-10 in Brussels
NEW DELHI – India and the European Union will hold the next round of negotiations for free trade agreement from Oct. 6 to Oct. 10 in Brussels, the commerce ministry said Monday. The two sides concluded the previous round of discussions just last week.
India and the EU "achieved significant convergence" during the last round of negotiations, the ministry said, adding, "Both sides aim to conclude the negotiations at the earliest." India and the EU have set a target to seal the trade deal by December.
The EU has become a very important trade partner for India as it is likely to become the top export destination after the US imposed 50% duty on Indian goods. India and the EU had initiated the negotiations for the trade deal in 2023 after talks stalled nine years ago.
The trade talks, which had started in 2007, were suspended due to differences over market access. The EU accounts for over 15% of India's total outbound shipment. India had exported $78.85 billion worth of goods to the EU in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and had a trade surplus of $15.17 billion. End
