NEW DELHI – India's unemployment rate fell to 5.1% in August from 5.2% in July, joint-lowest level since April, when the current series was started, according to the monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released Monday. The joblessness rate in urban areas fell to 6.7% last month from 7.2% in July. For rural areas, it fell to 4.3% in August from 4.4% in July.
The statistics ministry now releases unemployment data on a monthly basis for both rural and urban areas. Previously, the ministry only released quarterly urban unemployment data, and annual data for both urban and rural areas.
The labour force participation rate--the percentage of persons working or seeking or available for work--rose marginally to 55% last month from 54.9% in July for persons aged 15 years and above. The worker population ratio, which is the percentage of employed persons in the population, increased to 52.2% in August from 52% a month ago.
The labour force participation rate was higher in rural areas at 57% compared with 50.9% in urban areas. The participation rate was sharply higher for men than for women. The all-India labour force participation rate in August was 77% for men and 33.7% for women in the age group of 15 years and above.
The female workforce has increased in both rural and urban areas for the last two successive months, the ministry said. The participation rate rose slightly for women in rural areas to 37.4% last month from 36.9% in July, while for men, it fell to 77.9% in August from 78.1% the previous month. End
