MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast favourable conditions for the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from some parts of Punjab and Gujarat and some more parts of Rajasthan during the next two days. The southwest monsoon began withdrawing from parts of Rajasthan on Sunday, three days ahead of its normal date of withdrawal, the weather department said. The southwest monsoon usually begins withdrawing from the country around Sept. 17, and it withdraws from the entire country around Oct. 15.
This year, the southwest monsoon hit the Kerala coast on May 24, eight days ahead of its normal date of Jun. 1, and by May 29, the monsoon current covered southern and northeast India entirely, along with parts of east and central India. However, after May 29, the monsoon was in a weak phase and resumed advancing only on Jun. 16.
Meanwhile, an upper-air cyclonic circulation over central Assam and another over Meghalaya and its adjoining areas is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh till Tuesday, the weather department said. An orange alert has been issued for the Siang, west Siang, upper Siang, lower Dibang valley, Anjaw, and east Kameng districts of the state till Tuesday. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up 204.4 millimetres is expected within 24 hours. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over many parts of northeast India till Sunday.
The weather bureau has advised farmers in Arunachal Pradesh to immediately harvest matured crops of Jhum rice, soybean, ragi, foxtail millet, and vegetables and shift the harvested produce to properly covered shelters. It has also asked for proper drainage system for standing crops such as rice, soybean, ragi, vegetables, and fruit orchards to avoid water stagnation.
Under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation that lies over southeast Bay of Bengal, very heavy spells of rainfall are expected over some parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Wednesday and over Bihar and Jharkhand till Tuesday, as per the weather department. The weather agency has also issued an orange alert for these regions till Tuesday. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over many parts of east and central India till Saturday.
An upper-air cyclonic circulation over east Vidarbha and its neighbourhood regions is likely to cause extremely heavy rain over Konkan and central Maharshtra on Monday and the weather agency has issued a red alert for these regions. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
The department also sees heavy rainfall over Marathawada, Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till Tuesday. A red alert was issued over Mumbai in early hours of Monday for extremely heavy rainfall, the weather department said. In Maharashtra, the department has issued an advisory for the farmers to keep the harvested produce of moong and urad at safer places. End
