End tad down in thin trade; Nifty 50 closes above 25000

MUMBAI – Indian benchmark indices closed Monday's session on a slightly negative note after moving in a thin range. The indices remained in the red for most of the session. Information technology stocks dragged down the Nifty 50, even as index heavyweights provided some support.
The Nifty 50 settled at 25069.20, down 44.80 points or 0.2%. The BSE Sensex ended at 81785.74, down 118.96 points or 0.2%. The Nifty 50 snapped an eight-session rising streak, while the Sensex broke its five-session winning run. Despite falling for almost the entire session, the Nifty 50 managed to stay above 25000 points in a volatile session.
Only 16 of the 50 stocks in the Nifty 50 closed in the green. Despite closing lower, the market breadth was positive, with over 54% of stocks traded on the NSE ending higher. More than 53% of stocks traded on the BSE closed in positive territory.
Major IT, pharmaceutical, and automobile stocks were the laggards. Nifty IT, Nifty Pharma, Nifty Healthcare, and Nifty Auto closed 0.4-0.6% lower. Mahindra & Mahindra was among the worst-hit stocks in the Nifty 50 and closed down 1.7%.
Realty stocks gained sharply in a subdued market. All 10 constituents of the Nifty Realty closed 1.2–10.5% higher, with the index closing 2.4% higher. It was the top gainer among other sectoral indices. Banking and financial services stocks led gains in the market. Heavyweights ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank partly offset the losses in IT and automobile stocks.
Most defence stocks rose Monday, with the Nifty India Defence closing 0.7% higher. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the Defence Procurement Manual 2025 to further streamline and rationalise the revenue procurement process in the ministry and cater to the modern requirements of the Armed Forces.
Global brokerage Jefferies has initiated coverage on alcoholic beverage makers such as United Spirits, Radico Khaitan, and Allied Blenders and Distillers with a 'buy' rating. The brokerage sees a double-digit compounded annual growth rate in the top line across companies, led by the premium segment, with meaningful room to expand margins. Shares of United Spirits, Radico Khaitan, and Allied Blenders and Distillers closed 0.4-3.8% higher.
Vodafone Idea rose over 6% and was the top gainer in the Nifty 200 after reports said the Supreme Court will hear the company's plea for relief on adjusted gross revenue dues on Friday. RailTel Corp. of India rose 6.7?ter the company bagged an order worth INR 2.10 billion from a Bihar government body. The order size is over a quarter of the company's June quarter top line of INR 7.44 billion. The stock was among the top gainers in the Nifty 500.
Larsen & Toubro shares ended 0.2% higher after the company announced getting a 'large' order for the bullet train project from the National High Speed Rail Corp. The order is to build 156 route kilometres of high-speed ballastless track for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor and over 21 km of track-related works in underground sections and 135 km on elevated viaduct sections.
Tata Technologies rose 1.3?ter the company said it will fully acquire Germany-based ES-Tec group from MW Beteiligungs GmbH for 75 million euros or INR 7.76 billion, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Tata Technologies Pte. Anant Raj closed 10.5% higher on reports that the government is considering a tax exemption of up to 20 years for developers of data centres.
KRBL was among the most talked-about stocks in Monday's session after its independent director, Anil Kumar Chaudhary, resigned, citing governance issues. Chaudhary noted there are inconsistencies in the recording of minutes of the board and committee meetings, instances of information being withheld that impacts informed decision-making, and concern regarding corporate social responsibility funds, among other issues. The stock closed 9.6% lower.
Dr.Reddy's Laboratories fell 1.2?ter the US Food and Drug Administration issued five observations to the company's biologics manufacturing unit at Hyderabad on Saturday.
