NEW DELHI - The brownfield capacity expansion of 9,000 tonnes per year under implementation by value-added aluminium products manufacturer Century Extrusions Ltd. is "most likely" to be completed in the December quarter, Chairman and Managing Director Shivanshu Jhunjhunwala told Informist in an exclusive interaction. The company's target is to commission the expansion project in the December quarter, barring any operational or trial-related issues given the highly-technical nature of the new specialised manufacturing equipment, he said.
In the worst-case scenario, the project will get commissioned in the March quarter, according to the company's managing director. The company had indicated, in its annual report for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), that this brownfield capacity expansion project will be completed in FY26.
The brownfield expansion is taking place in the company's manufacturing facility at Kharagpur in West Bengal. Post expansion, the installed capacity of the company will be 24,000 tonnes per year.
The brownfield project aims to address the existing capacity limitations and de-risk the company's business model, it said in the annual report. "Our goal is that this (brownfield project) should help us achieve (production of) more high-end products for the automotive and defence sectors," Jhunjhunwala said.
The company is already catering to customers from these two sectors along with solar energy and infrastructure sectors. The new plant will have the capability to produce value-added products with "more critical accuracies and specifications, hardness, tolerances etc.," Jhunjhunwala said. The production equipment at the brownfield unit is not a straight-forward one; it is custom-designed, he said. The company does not make mass market products like standardised bars, channels, flats, sections that are sold at per kilogramme rates, he said.
The company had said in its FY25 annual report that the brownfield unit will be strategically located alongside the current facility, which will enable a "seamless scale-up with minimal disruption to operations." The unit will have a "new high-tonnage extrusion press with improved die-change efficiency, and enhanced billet handling and profile finishing systems," it said.
In FY25, the total production of Century Extrusions was 13,433 tonnes. The company said the aluminium extrusion industry is the foundation for precision-engineered infrastructure, transportation systems, and industrial applications.
For the June quarter, the company had reported a revenue from operations of INR 1.04 billion, up from INR 1.02 billion in the year ago quarter. The company's net profit had declined to INR 23.6 million in the June quarter from INR 24.3 million in the same quarter a year ago.
At 1420 IST, shares of Century Extrusions traded at INR 26.83, down 0.4%, on the National Stock Exchange. End
