NEW DELHI – Wholesale sales of automobiles in August were mainly led by a year-on-year growth in the two-wheeler segment, even as companies held back despatches of passenger vehicles ahead of the new goods and services tax regime, which will come into effect on Sept. 22, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Monday.

Automobile companies despatched 2.19 million units in August, up nearly 5%. Total exports grew almost 29% to 557,446 units. Ahead of the festival season, production of two-wheelers and three-wheelers saw a ramp-up as overall automobile production grew over 8% to 2.69 million units, the data showed.

Companies sold 1.83 million two-wheelers to dealerships in India last month, up over 7%. Overseas two-wheeler sales grew nearly 28% to 432,033 units. Domestic wholesale sales of two-wheelers were led by growth in scooter sales as despatches grew nearly 13% to 683,397 units last month. Motorcycles, which form over 60% of the overall two-wheelers sold in India, saw despatches grow by just over 4% to 1.11 million units. Production of two-wheelers grew 10% in August to 2.21 million units as companies began preparations for the festival season.

In August, passenger vehicle sales fell nearly 9% to 321,840 units. Excluding data from Tata Motors Ltd., passenger vehicle sales fell 9% to 280,839 units. SIAM excludes data from the Safari-maker as a detailed breakup is unavailable with the lobby body.

Despatches of passenger cars in India fell nearly 7% to 90,466 units, but exports grew a rapid 24% to 43,650 units. Companies sold 179,588 utility vehicles to dealerships in August, down nearly 11% on year. However, exports of these variants grew nearly 26% to 37,522 units last month. Production of passenger vehicles fell just over 4% on year to 361,341 units. Overall exports of passenger vehicles grew nearly 25% to 82,246 units.

Wholesale sales of three-wheelers in India grew to a record high in August to 75,759 units, rising over 8% on year. Growth was supported by robust sales in passenger carriers and goods carriers. Exports of three-wheelers were even better, as companies shipped 42,765 units abroad, up over 48%. Production of three-wheelers last month increased nearly 16% to 119,855 units.

APR-AUG
Indian automobile companies sold 9.98 million units to dealerships in India during the Apr-Aug period, down nearly 1%. Exports continued to be robust, as companies sold 2.54 million units overseas, up over 25% on year. Production in this period was better than domestic sales, as companies manufactured 12.79 million units, up nearly 5% on year.

Domestic sales of two-wheelers mirrored overall sales in Apr-Aug, as despatches fell nearly 1% to 8.08 million units. Of this, the only sub-segment to report growth was scooters as companies sold 2.99 million units in India in Apr-Aug, up nearly 6% on year. In contrast, motorcycle sales fell over 4% to 4.90 million units.

Overall passenger vehicle sales till the end of August fell over 2% to 1.59 million units while three-wheeler sales shone as companies sold 310,373 units in India, up 5.5% year on year.
