India kharif sowing up 1.4% as of Fri; oilseed, cotton acreage down

MUMBAI – The total sown area under various kharif crops rose 1.4% on year to 111.08 million hectares as on Friday, according to the data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The area under paddy, maize, pulses, and sugarcane rose on year, while that under oilseeds and cotton fell.
Paddy acreage rose nearly 2% on year to 43.85 million hectares and the area under pulses increased nearly 1% to 11.81 million hectares as of Friday. The acreage under pulses rose despite a fall in the area under tur to 4.58 million hectares from 4.63 million a year ago. The area under urad rose nearly 7% to 2.37 million hectares, while moong acreage fell marginally to 3.45 million hectares.
The area under coarse cereals, promoted as 'Shri Anna' by the government, was up nearly 7% at 19.29 million hectares, mainly supported by the rise in area under maize. The acreage of maize rose about 13% to 9.48 million hectares. The area under jowar was at 1.407 million hectares, largely steady from 1.41 million hectares. The area under bajra rose nearly 1% to 6.84 million hectares.
The acreage under oilseeds fell nearly 3% to 18.88 million hectares, as farmers shifted to maize and paddy for better returns. The area under soybean fell nearly 5% to 12.04 million hectares on year. Area sown under groundnut rose nearly 1% to 4.80 million hectares on year.
Similarly, the area under sugarcane rose nearly 3% to 5.73 million hectares on year, whereas cotton acreage fell nearly 3% to 10.96 million hectares.
