MUMBAI – India received 6.2 millimetres of rainfall on Sunday, 6% above the normal of 5.8 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. As of Sunday, the country received 846.4 millimetres of rainfall during the monsoon season so far this year, 7% above the normal for the period, according to the data.

The southwest monsoon began withdrawing from parts of Rajasthan on Sunday, three days ahead of its normal date of withdrawal, the weather department said. The southwest monsoon usually begins withdrawing from the country around Sept. 17, and it withdraws from the entire country around Oct. 15.

Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, three received above-normal rainfall on Sunday while one recorded below-normal showers. Rainfall in east and northeast India was 40% above normal at 14.7 millimetres, the data showed. Central India recorded 6.6 millimetres of rainfall, 10% above the normal of 6.0 millimetres.

Rainfall in south peninsular India was 12% above normal at 5.7 millimetres, according to the data. Northwest India recorded 1.5 millimetres of showers, 56% below the normal of 3.5 millimetres. 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in nine, "excess" in four, "deficient" in nine, and "large deficient" in 14 subdivisions on Sunday.  End
