NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump Saturday urged members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to stop buying crude oil from Russia and impose 50-100% tariffs on China in order to put pressure on Russia to end its war with Ukraine.

The tariffs on China should be imposed collectively by the 32-member bloc and can be withdrawn after the Russia-Ukraine war ends, the US president said. "If NATO does as I say, the WAR will end quickly, and all of those lives will be saved! If not, you are just wasting my time, and the time, energy, and money of the United States," Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social. His post did not mention any further tariffs on India.

Bloomberg had Friday reported that Trump was willing to impose new higher tariffs on India and China if the European nations also impose similar tariffs on both the nations. India has drawn Trump's ire and the US has imposed 50% tariffs on imports of Indian goods – among the highest in the world – due to its oil purchases from Russia. In a recent interview, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said India would continue buying Russia oil.

However, earlier this week, both Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said they were continuing negotiations on a potential trade deal that would minimise the tariffs. This hinted at a thaw in the increasing frosty communication between the two countries.

In the remainder of the post, Trump said NATO's oil purchases were weakening its negotiating power with Russia to facilitate a ceasefire. The multilateral organisation has been providing military support to Ukraine ever since the conflict first erupted in February 2022. Trump has in recent months ramped up efforts to convince Russia or Ukraine to end the war, and has publicly expressed his hope of getting the Nobel Peace Prize.  End
