NEW DELHI – In his first visit to Manipur since a series of ethnic clashes erupted in the state two years ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday said the Centre is looking to make the state a symbol of peace. He also laid foundation stones for projects worth over INR 73 billion from Churachandpur, one of the towns where the violence took place.

"We are working with the goal of making Manipur a symbol of peace, prosperity and progress," the prime minister said. The central government's approach emphasises dialogue, respect and mutual understanding, Modi said. He urged all organisations to move forward on the "path of peace" to fulfill their aspirations.

The state has been in turmoil since 2023, after ethnic violence erupted between the Meitei community and Kuki-Zo tribes. According to reports, over 250 people were killed and several thousands were displaced in the violence. On his visit, the prime minister met some of the displaced people.

In February, the Centre had imposed President's Rule in violence-hit Manipur, days after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh tendered his resignation to the governor. Since then, the state has been under President's Rule. The next state assembly election is scheduled in 2027.

Congress leaders called the prime minister's visit "half-hearted" and delayed, according to media reports. Over the past two years, Opposition members including Congress' Rahul Gandhi had been demanding that Modi visit the strife-hit state, even holding protests in parliament.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister also visited neighbouring Mizoram. He inaugurated projects worth over INR 90 billion in the state, including connecting state capital Aizawl using the Indian Railways. Modi also inaugurated projects in sectors like road, energy and sports.  End
