MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall and very heavy showers over parts of east and central, west, and south India till Wednesday due to multiple weather systems over these regions. Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Bihar from Sunday to Tuesday and sub-Himalayan West Bengal till Sunday.
The weather bureau has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and can go up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.
These weather conditions are mainly due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Bihar and adjoining Jharkhand and another over central Assam at lower tropospheric levels. There is also a low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal, northern Andhra Pradesh, and southern Odisha which is leading to heavy showers over eastern, central, western, and southern India.
The weather department has also issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in Telangana for Saturday, under the influence of the low pressure area. The weather department also sees isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu from Tuesday to Friday, Telangana till Wednesday, and northern interior Karnataka till Tuesday.
A trough runs from the low pressure area to southern Maharashtra, which is causing heavy rainfall over western India, the weather department said. It has issued an orange alert for Konkan, Goa on Sunday and Monday due to very heavy rainfall. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail over central Maharashtra on Monday. End
