NEW DELHI – As India and the European Union maximise their efforts to conclude the negotiations for the proposed free trade agreement by the end of the year, EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic is confident of both sides meeting the timeline, he said Friday in Delhi. Sefcovic visited India to participate in the 13th round of negotiations between the two parties for the trade deal.

The EU has been working with India to unlock new investments and expand market access amid the shifting global trade and economic situation, Sefcovic said at an event. A major shift in global trade conditions emanates from the US' decision to impose extra tariffs. Last month, Washington imposed 50% tariff on Indian goods and 15% on European goods.

There is huge potential between India and the EU to forge new synergies through the trade pact, Sefcovic said. The two sides are committed to seal the deal by December.

India and the EU resumed negotiations for a trade deal in 2023 after a gap of nine years. The talks, which had started in 2007, were suspended due to differences over market access. The EU accounts for over 15% of India's total outbound shipments. India had exported $78.85 billion worth of goods to the EU in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and had a trade surplus of $15.17 billion.  End
