NEW DELHI - Indian government must demonstrate policy stability and predictability to enable creation of a manufacturing ecosystem as the country aspires to be a global manufacturing hub, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Hisashi Takeuchi said at the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India's 65th Annual Session on Friday.
"In Japan's own experience, the government played an important role in creating an enabling ecosystem for manufacturing. Policies were stable and predictable," Takeuchi said.
The automotive giant's executive lauded the Centre for pushing through key policy measures such as slashing the corporate tax rates, income tax break, goods and service tax rate rejig, and the various schemes aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing.
Takeuchi joined Japanese company Suzuki Motor Corp in 1986 (SMC). He took over as Maruti Suzuki's chief in April 2022. At the event, Takeuchi recalled how Japan overcome difficulties after the second World War to emerge as a global giant in the automotive sector.
"Japanese companies channelised human emotions towards progress. Employees were treated as partners," he said. "On the shop floor, no work was considered small or big," he added.
Companies there also invested heavily in research and development in that period. Takeuchi called upon Indian companies to do the same--to invest in research and development, and to treat people as partners in order to build companies of global scale.
Takeuchi said that the next few decades belong to India, given that it has the world's largest working-age population. "The Indian government is not just supporting industry but driving it forward through initiatives like PLI, Make in India, and Aatmanirbhar Bharat," he said. "It is now upon us, the industry, to make the most of this," Takeuchi added. End
