--Food secy: Yet to decide when to start wheat open market sales

NEW DELHI - The government has allocated 3.0 million tonnes of wheat to be sold through weekly auctions under the open market sale scheme in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said. This is in line with the allocation made last year.

 

"The government has now taken a decision to have 3.0 million tonnes of OMSS this year," Chopra said on the sidelines of the India Sugar & Bio-energy Conference. "So, we will be now deciding the timing of the OMSS auctions depending on the market condition and the prices."

 

In 2024-25, Food Corp. of India had started open market sales in December and sold the entire 3.0 million tonnes allocated amid firm demand and tight supply in the market. In 2023-24, the government sold 9.4 million tonnes of wheat, an all-time high, under the scheme to check prices in view of the general election slated for Apr-Jun 2024.

 

According to a government source, FCI is likely to start open market sales by the end of September. The government has set a reserve price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for open-market sales of wheat for 2025-26.  End
