MUMBAI – The Indian Sugar Mills & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association has retained its gross sugar production estimate of 34.9 million tonnes for the 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) sugar season. The industry body retained its estimate after a reassessment of the crop based on the progress of the monsoon, water availability, and other related factors for all the sugar-producing states.
The association had released its preliminary estimate on sugar output on Jul. 31 based on pan-India satellite imagery and field reports.
In Maharashtra and Karnataka, favourable monsoon conditions and abundant August rainfall in key regions have ensured healthy crop growth and normal development, ISMA said in a release. With a positive outlook for the remainder of the southwest monsoon and the upcoming northeast monsoon, coupled with higher reservoir levels than last year, expectations of a strong crop have strengthened further, it said.
In Uttar Pradesh, crop conditions are significantly better than last year owing to mill-level cane development initiatives and timely varietal improvements, the association said. Improved yields and higher recovery rates are expected this season due to a lower incidence of diseases in crops, it said. In Tamil Nadu, the crop outlook remains promising, with both yield and recovery now projected to exceed earlier expectations, it said.
Overall, improved cane quality in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu is supporting a marginal rise in sugar output. However, floods in states like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttarakhand are likely to see minor reductions in cane output, which may offset gains in other states, it said. But the output estimates outlook will remain broadly stable.
ISMA said it will reassess crop conditions in October and release its first advance estimate in October-November. End
