MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department said increased rainfall is expected over northeast and adjoining east India from Thursday due to the influence of two weather systems impacting the region. Some areas of the region may also experience very heavy rainfall during the weekend.
Starting Friday, the seven states in northeast India are likely to record very heavy showers till Monday. The weather bureau has issued an orange alert in these states for very heavy rainfall during these days. An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres is expected within 24 hours.
Very heavy rainfall is also likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim Saturday for which the weather department issued an orange alert. An orange alert has also been issued for Bihar due to very heavy showers for Thursday. Pockets of northeast and east and central India are also likely to record heavy rainfall from Thursday till mid-next week.
These weather conditions are mainly caused by three cyclonic circulations and a trough. There is an upper-air cyclonic circulation over south Odisha adjoining north coastal Andhra Pradesh. There are two more over northeast India, one over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, and another over central Assam. There is also a trough running from sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim to west central Bay of Bengal, the weather bureau said.
The weather agency also said very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of west India from Friday to Sunday. While there are no weather systems over west India, private weather forecaster Skymet said the cyclonic circulation over coastal parts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh is likely to move inland slowly, positioning itself over Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Telangana at the end of this week. This is expected to increase the intensity of rainfall over west India too. End
