MUMBAI – One person died and some others were injured in a gas leak at Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd.'s Ranjitnagar plant Wednesday, the company said in an exchange filing Thursday. The accident occurred due to a rupture at one of the bellows of a pipeline, which resulted in the gas leak.

Employees exposed to gas were administered first aid at the company's occupational health centre and some were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. The company said it is awaiting the dead person's post-mortem report but believes the person died during the rush of evacuation.

The company halted operations at the plant and used sprinklers to control the gas leak, it said in the filing. It plans to launch a detailed investigation into the accident.

The company clarified that its operations are insured under an industrial all-risk insurance policy. "In view of this policy, the loss of equipment, if any, and the business loss suffered on account of disruption of manufacturing operations are covered...," it said in the filing.

For the quarter ended Jun. 30, Gujarat Fluorochemicals had reported a net profit of INR 1.84 billion on a revenue of INR 12.81 billion. Thursday, shares of the company closed 3% lower at INR 3,620.90 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
