--Minister Goyal: In active dialogue with US for trade deal
NEW DELHI - India is in active dialogue with the US for a trade deal, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said Wednesday. Goyal's statement comes after US President Donald Trump announced resumption of negotiations between New Delhi and Washington early Wednesday.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also welcomed Trump's announcement. "I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership," Modi said in a post on X referring to Trump's Truth Social post. "Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest," Modi added.
But both sides are yet to announce the schedule for the next round of negotiations for the trade deal. The trade talks had halted last month when a delegation of officials from the US cancelled their scheduled visit to New Delhi for the next round of negotiations for the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement. Meanwhile, Trump imposed extra 50% tariff on Indian goods in August. Almost 55% of India's export basket to the US now attract extra duty. End
