NEW DELHI – The number of e-way bills generated in August rose 22.4% on year to 129.14 million, according to data from the Goods and Services Tax Network. Sequentially, the number was 2.1% lower than the record high of 131.91 million in July.
At 22.4%, the on-year growth in generation of e-way bills in August is slower than 25.8% in July, which was the highest since October 2023. An e-way bill is a GST document for transport of goods worth more than INR 50,000 within or outside a state. The number of e-way bills generated is considered a lead indicator of economic activity and domestic trade.
An increase in e-way bills generally suggests GST collections would be robust the following month, as most transactions are reflected in the next month's collections. GST collections rose 6.5% on year to INR 1.86 trillion in August, data released earlier this month showed. End
