--NDA's CP Radhakrishnan wins Vice-Presidential election

NEW DELHI – Ruling National Democratic Alliance's candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan was elected as the vice-president of India on Tuesday. Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes, while the opposition nominee, B. Sudershan Reddy, secured 300 votes, according to Returning Officer P.C. Mody.

The post of vice-president fell vacant after incumbent Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned in late July, citing health reasons. The vice-president of India is also the ex officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Radhakrishnan is currently the governor of Maharashtra. The opposition candidate, Reddy, is a former judge of the Supreme Court. Radhakrishnan, who is from Tamil Nadu, was elected to the Lok Sabha twice from Tamil Nadu on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket.

Returning Officer Mody said 767 votes were cast in the election, of which 15 were invalid. The vice president is elected by the members of both Houses of Parliament.  End
