--Minister Goyal: May reach "substantial" conclusion on EU FTA this week

NEW DELHI– India and the European Union may be able to "substantially" conclude the negotiations for the proposed free trade agreement this week, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said Tuesday. A week-long round of negotiations between the two parties began Monday here.

Both sides have finalised 60-65% of the chapters of the agreement, Goyal told media on the sidelines of a steel association event in New Delhi.

"We are both working very, very actively to converge on different parts of the agreement... By the time my counterpart Maros Sefcovic, the EU trade commissioner, comes to India, I think we will be quite set to conclude the agreement substantially," Goyal said. The Indian commerce minister is scheduled to meet Sefcovic on Friday.

Both India and the EU have set a target to seal the trade deal by December. The EU has become a very important trade partner for India as it is likely to become the top export destination after the US imposed 50% duty on Indian goods.

The two sides resumed negotiations for a trade deal in 2023 after a gap of nine years. The talks, which had started in 2007, were suspended due to differences over market access. The EU accounts for over 15% of India's total outbound shipments. India had exported $78.85 billion worth of goods to the EU in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) and had a trade surplus of $15.17 billion.  End
