NEW DELHI – The Centre Tuesday asked manufacturers, packers, and importers of pre-packaged commodities to declare revised retail sale prices on unsold manufactured or imported stock, in addition to the existing retail sale price, after the revision in goods and services tax was announced Wednesday. The deadline for the same is Dec. 31 or until the stock is exhausted, whichever is earlier, according to a letter issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
As per the instructions, manufacturers, packers, and importers of pre-packaged items have been asked to continue displaying original selling prices with the revised prices without overwriting the old price. The government has also asked to ensure that the difference between the original and revised retail prices should not exceed the extent of the increase in tax or the reduction of it.
Manufacturers and packers have been asked to publish at least two advertisements in newspapers and notify dealers and the consumer affairs department about the change in price. Unused packaging materials or wrappers prior to the revision in GST can still be used until Dec. 31, or until exhausted, with corrections made to reflect the revised prices, the letter read.
The GST Council Wednesday decided to overhaul the rate structure by tweaking the four-slab GST structure of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% to a two-slab structure of 5% and 18%. The Council also introduced a new GST rate of 40% that will be imposed on sin and luxury goods. All new rates, except for those on tobacco products, will take effect on Sept. 22. End
