MUMBAI – The intensity and spread of rainfall over the country is expected to remain low till Monday, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. In the absence of any strong weather systems, only light to moderate spell of rainfall is likely over most parts of the country, the weather agency said.

The deep depression currently lying over Pakistan, which has been causing relentless rainfall over Gujarat, is likely to weaken in the next few hours, the weather agency said. The formation of fresh active western disturbance is unlikely across the mountainous states of north India, the agency said. A lean weather belt will extend across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, north Madhya Pradesh, and west Uttar Pradesh, bringing mild spell of rainfall over these regions. The west coast--from South Gujarat to Kerala, across Konkan, Goa, and coastal Karnataka--is likely to witness the least amount of rainfall till Monday, it said.

The persisting cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal will be the only weather system to remain active during the forecast period, the weather agency said. The circulation is expected to remain stationary over the region for the next four–five days, after which it will begin to move inland as a weakened system. The circulation's reach will remain limited to the coastal and central parts of the country. As the withdrawal of the monsoon draws closer around mid-September, these systems struggle to reach parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, the agency said.

Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation, fairly widespread rainfall with moderate intensity is likely over West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana till Monday, the agency said.

On other hand, monsoon conditions are likely to revive over northeast India during the forecast period. Parts of south India are also expected to see a slight rise in rainfall. During weak monsoon conditions over the country, the southern subdivisions usually witness an uptick in the showers, the weather agency said. Accordingly, coastal Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the interior of south peninsular India will get moderate intensity showers, it said.  End
