NEW DELHI - Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will meet the European Union Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maro efovi in New Delhi on Friday to discuss the free trade agreement, a commerce ministry official said. A fresh round of negotiations between chief negotiators and trade officials from the two sides began Monday.

Both sides had held the last round of talks for the trade deal in July. The ongoing negotiations assume significance amid the volatile trade and tariff environment created by the US. After the US, India's top export destination

imposed a 50% tariff, the EU is now likely to become the top destination. India is looking to expedite the conclusion of negotiations with the EU by signing the trade agreement in tranches.

Brussels is also keen to sign the deal with India soon as goods from the EU are subject to a 15% reciprocal

tariff by the US. India and the EU have set an aim to conclude the negotiations by December. The two sides resumed discussions in 2023 after a gap of nine years. The trade talks, initially started in 2007, were suspended due to differences over market access.

The EU has a share of around 15% in India's total outbound shipments. India exported goods worth $75.85 billion to the EU in 2024–25 (Apr-Mar), and had a trade surplus of $15.17 billion.  End

US$1 = INR 85.27
