MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department said heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of west and northwest India till Tuesday. This is due to a deep depression formed over north Gujarat and southwest Rajasthan. Additionally, there is a trough connecting the weather system and an upper cyclonic circulation over south Punjab, causing heavy spell of rainfall over these regions, the weather department said.
Under the influence of the deep depression, Saurashtra and Kutch are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall Monday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan till Tuesday, the weather agency said. Light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms, with heavy rainfall, are expected over other parts of west and northwest India during the week, the department said.
The deep depression, which is causing rainfall over Rajasthan and Gujarat, is likely to move across southeast Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan Monday. Thereafter, it is expected to move westwards and weaken gradually into a depression, the bureau said.
The weather department has issued a red alert in Gujarat and west Rajasthan, and an orange alert in east Rajasthan for Monday. A red alert, the highest level of weather warning, indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours, whereas, an orange alert indicates rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.
According to the weather bureau, there is a low to moderate risk of flash floods for next 24 hours over a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Barmer and Jalor districts in west Rajasthan, over Banaskantha, Mahesana, Patan, Kutch, and Sabar Kantha districts in Gujarat.
The department has advised farmers in parts of Gujarat to drain out excess rain water from fields of cotton, bajra, maize, rice, soybean, and groundnut. Similar advice has been issued to farmers in Rajasthan in the fields of cotton, maize, soybean, groundnut, and pulses. End
