India Apr-Aug major ports' freight traffic up 5% YoY

AHMEDABAD – Freight traffic handled by major ports in India in Apr-Aug rose 4.67% on year to 364.43 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed.
This was mainly led by crude and petroleum products cargo, which rose 8.42% on year during Apr-Aug to 111.03 million tonnes. Crude and petroleum products cargo accounted for nearly 30.5% of total cargo handled at all the major ports across the country. The volumes of liquids, other than crude and petroleum products, rose 1.78% on year to 14.34 million tonnes.
Other than crude oil and other liquid cargo, the container traffic saw a 9.54% increase in tonnage terms at 86.83 million tonnes and raw fertiliser up 11.39% on year to 4.38 million tonnes. The coking coal volumes rose 2.24% on year to 25.80 million tonnes, while miscellaneous traffic for Apr-Aug was up 5.07% on year at 45.04 million tonnes. The volume of finished fertilisers imported at these ports in Apr-Aug was up 32.93% on year at 3.77 million tonnes.
The thermal coal cargo volume for Apr-Aug fell 3.98% on year to 53.41 million tonnes. The volume of iron ore pellets was down 9.51% on year to 19.84 million tonnes.
Among specific ports, Paradip port handled the highest traffic in Apr-Aug at 64.65 million tonnes, followed by Deendayal port at 61.29 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 41.27 million tonnes.
