--CRISIL arm: Cost of vegetarian thali down 7% on year at INR 29.1 in Aug
MUMBAI – The cost of a home-cooked vegetarian thali rose 4% on month in August to INR 29.1 caused by a rise in tomato prices in the wake of lower supply, CRISIL Intelligence said in a report. However, the price of the thali declined 7% on a yearly basis due to a sharp decline in vegetable prices, it said. Meanwhile, the cost of a home-cooked non-vegetarian thali rose 2% on month in August to INR 54.6 while it was down 8% on year.
Prices of potato and onion declined 31% and 37% on year, respectively, due a high base. "In the year-ago period, potato production had shrunk 5-7% due to blight infestation and weather changes, pushing up the prices."
According to the report, the agency expects the total potato output to rise 3-5% on year and that of onion 18-20%, pulling down prices of these vegetables. Prices of pulses also declined 14% on year due to higher production and stocks compared with a year-ago period.
Price of the vegetarian thali rose on a monthly basis by 4% as tomato prices surged 26% on month which was driven by a 35% on-year decline in arrivals in local markets, the agency said. However, prices of potato and onion were stable in August from July, it added.
The prices of non-vegetarian thali fell on yearly basis due to a 10% on-year fall in broiler prices. The prices of broiler makes up about 50% of the entire cost of the non-vegetarian thali. Lower prices of vegetable and pulses also supported the total fall.
However, prices of vegetable oils surged 24% on year due to high demand at the start of the festival season. Additionally, a 6% on-year increase in prices of liquified petroleum gas cylinders limited the overall price decline of the thalis. "The rise in the cost of non-vegetarian thali was capped as oversupply of broilers kept their prices stable on-month despite a rise in demand with the conclusion of the Shravan month."
"In the near term, thali prices are likely to remain lower on-year, aided by the high base of vegetables and pulses," Pushan Sharma, director of CRISIL Intelligence, said in a note. The government's decision to allow free imports of yellow pea and black gram, or urad, is expected to exert downward pressure on pulse prices, he added. End
