Urban India's appetite for 2-wheelers hits 11-month high in August

NEW DELHI - Two-wheelers, which form the bulk of automobiles sold in India, saw sales in urban areas rising to highest in last 11 months in August, data by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations showed Monday. The contribution of urban areas to overall automobiles sold in India was also higher than the average sales in these areas in 2023-24 (Apr-Mar) and FY25.

 

Dealerships sold 1.96 million automobile units in August. Of this, nearly 52% were in rural areas and just over 48% were in urban areas. The contribution of urban areas to overall automobile sales in India was the highest since 48.4% recorded in September last year, indicating a strong resurgence in demand. Urban areas, on average, contributed 44.8% to overall automobiles sold in FY24 and FY25. 

 

Two-wheelers, which form nearly 70% of the overall automobiles sold by dealerships in India, grew 2% on year to 1.37 million units last month. Rural India buys the highest number of two-wheelers, as they contribute 53.5% to aggregate sales. Urban areas' contribution of 46.5% was the highest since 46.9% in September last year. 

 

This contribution of 46.5% of urban areas to two-wheeler sales was comfortably higher than the average of around 41.7% recorded in FY24 and FY25.

 

Last month, automobile retail sales in urban areas grew 6.5% on year while sales in rural areas fell 0.4%. A similar trend was seen in two-wheeler sales as well as sales in urban areas grew over 8% on year while rural sales fell 2.5% on year. 

 

Passenger vehicles, which formed just under 17% of all automobiles sold in India in August, saw urban areas retaining their dominance at around 62%.  End
