IMD forecasts exceptionally heavy rainfall over Gujarat region on Sat

NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has warned of extremely heavy rainfall over Gujarat and west Rajasthan till Sunday, with the Gujarat region likely to witness "exceptionally heavy" showers exceeding 30 centimetres of rainfall on Saturday.
The forecast comes as a well-marked low-pressure system over southeast Rajasthan has moved into the central parts of south Rajasthan this morning and is expected to concentrate into a depression over south Rajasthan and adjoining north Gujarat by Sunday morning.
Under its influence, "heavy to very heavy" rainfall is likely over Gujarat and Rajasthan till Sunday, with the possibility of "extremely heavy" showers at isolated places over the Gujarat region and Saurashtra & Kutch till Sunday, IMD said.
The weather bureau has issued red and orange alerts for parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan till Monday. A red alert – the highest level of weather warning - indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours, while an orange alert indicates rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.
The IMD cautioned of waterlogging, flooding, and damage to standing crops. Farmers have been advised to ensure drainage in fields to prevent inundation of crops such as cotton, groundnut, sugarcane, rice, maize, and pulses.
Meanwhile, isolated heavy showers are likely over west Rajasthan on Tuesday, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on Saturday and Tuesday, and east Uttar Pradesh on Thursday and Friday. IMD has forecast very heavy rainfall over Konkan and Goa and central Maharashtra during the weekend, east Rajasthan on Sunday, and west Rajasthan on Monday.
In east and central India, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha till Wednesday, east Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday and Thursday, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during the next seven days, IMD said.
The department has advised suspension of fishing operations along and off the north Maharashtra coasts on Saturday and Gujarat coasts till Tuesday, and in parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal till Thursday. End
