NEW DELHI – Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Friday that he would submit a detailed report to the prime minister on the flood situation in Punjab. "The crisis is big, but the Central Government will leave no stone unturned to overcome this crisis," Chouhan said on X. The minister visited flood-affected villages – Ghonewal in Amritsar district, Begowal in Kapurthala district, Dharamkot Randhawa, and Behrampur in Gurdaspur district – on Thursday.
Chouhan described the situation as "very grim" and "dreadful", with crops submerged, destroyed, and 1,400 villages completely affected. "Floodwater has inundated the fields here since August 26. The water of the Ravi is still flowing into the fields. There is no soil under the feet, only silt, which has accumulated," he said.
The minister said that the destruction would have repercussions for the next crop season as well. "The pain and loss cannot be estimated. It's heartbreaking to see the situation...This is challenging, but every possible effort will be made and complete help will be provided to deliver relief," he added.
Chouhan said the floods were partly caused by weakening of embankments along the Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, and Ghaggar rivers due to illegal mining. "Now it is necessary to strengthen those structures so that Punjab can be saved from such tragedies in the future," he said.
The central government has sent two high-level teams to Punjab to assess the situation, including officers from the ministries of agriculture, rural development, roads, energy, finance, and Jal Shakti. The state government will also conduct its own assessment. End
