NEW DELHI – Automotive giant Tata Motors Ltd. Friday said it will pass on the full benefit of the recently announced rejig in goods and services tax rates effective Sept. 22. Prices of its car models will fall by up to INR 155,000, it said in a statement. "With demand for deliveries expected to surge during the festive season, we encourage customers to book their preferred vehicle early for delivery during the festive period," the company said.
Prices of its hatchback Tiago will be slashed by up to INR 75,000, Tata Motors said. Currently, the ex-showroom prices of the Tata Tiago in New Delhi start at INR 499,990 and go up to INR 855,000. The Tata Tigor, a compact sedan, will see its prices come down by up to INR 80,000. Its ex-showroom price currently starts at INR 5,99,900 and goes up to INR 955,000.
The smaller cars, or the hatchback segment, are expected to be the biggest gainers in the automobile industry following the rate rationalisation. Currently, a tax of 28% along with a cess of 1-2% is levied on these variants, which will come down to a flat rate of 18% from Sept. 22.
Tata Motors' premium hatchback Altroz, which received a facelift earlier this year, will cost up to INR 110,000 less. Currently, its ex-showroom price ranges from INR 6,89,000-1.15 million. Another model set to receive a price cut is Tata Motors' compact sport utility vehicle Punch, which currently costs INR 6,19,990 ex-showroom New Delhi. The company said the cost of getting a Punch will go down by up to INR 85,000 once the new GST rates are effective.
Another compact sport utility vehicle from Tata Motors' stable, the Nexon, is set to see the highest price cut across Tata Motors' portfolio, of up to INR 155,000. The ex-showroom prices of the Nexon range between INR 600,000 and INR 1.03 million.
Prices of Tata Motors Curvv, a crossover between a coupe and a sport utility vehicle, will go down by up to INR 65,000. Its current ex-showroom prices range from INR 1.0 million-INR 2.0 million.
Sport utility vehicles, too, are set to get cheaper, as bigger cars will attract a tax of 40% with no compensation cess from Sept. 22. Currently, bigger cars are levied a GST of 28% and a compensation cess of 17-22%.
Among its sport utility vehicle range, prices of Harrier are set to come down by up to INR 140,000. The Harrier currently costs in the range of INR 1.5 million – INR 2.7 million. The Tata Motors Safari will cost up to INR 145,000 less from Sept. 22. It is currently priced at INR 1.6 million – INR 2.7 million.
For the quarter ended June, Tata Motors had reported a consolidated net profit of INR 39.24 billion on a revenue of INR 1.044 trillion. Friday, its shares closed 0.6% higher at INR 691.70 on the National Stock Exchange. End
