MUMBAI – The FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 101.4 points in August, down 2% from July and 24.3% below its level a year earlier, according to data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. The index declined due to a 2.7% fall in Indica prices from its July level, marking a 44-month low for the month, according to the report.

Glutinous and Japonica rice indices also fell by 0.5% to 98 points and 4.9% to 93.1 points, respectively, due to weak demand. Prices of Aromatic rice inched up, driven by an uptick in Indian rice prices, it said. The Aromatic rice index rose to 95.7 points from 94.7 points.

India Pusa Basmati variety rose to $925 per tonne in August from $875 a tonne, influenced by thinning availabilities and prospects of sales to Iran following the suspension of seasonal import restrictions, the organisation said. The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India rose to $361.2 a tonne in August from $356.9 per tonne in July.

Prices of the 5% broken non-basmati rice rose to $377.0 per tonne in August from $371.2 per tonne due to demand from Africa, the report said. The price of 5% parboiled rice from India fell to $368 a tonne from $380.2 per tonne in July.

The price of Thailand's A1 Super rice variety fell to $324.8 a tonne in August from $350.8 per tonne in July, while that of Thailand's 25% broken variety fell to $366 per tonne from $384.0 per tonne in July. The fall in prices resulted from efforts to narrow price differentials with competing origins. Rice exports from Thailand lowered quotations of non-fully broken rice to their lowest level since March 2017.

The price of Vietnam's 25% broken rice rose to $364.3 a tonne in August from $354.7 per tonne in July. Pakistan's 5% broken rice declined to $361.3 a tonne from $388.8 in July and basmati rice fell to $1,064.6 per tonne in August from $1,066.0 per tonne in July.  End
