MUMBAI – India's headline indices closed flat on Friday after a volatile session. Indices were in the red for better part of the session but pared most losses to close flat towards the end. Automobile stocks continued to gain on the back of benefits from goods and services tax cuts while investors booked profit in the fast-moving consumer goods stocks. Investors sold shares of information technology companies after rumours that US was considering to impose tariff on IT services.

The Nifty 50 closed at 24741 points, up 6.70 points, gaining for three session in a row. The 50-stock index fell to 24621 points intraday and took support at that level to recover from the losses. However, it continued to face strong resistance at 24750-24800 points. The 50-stock index closed higher on a week-on-week basis, driven by optimism around GST reforms, unlike the previous week when it ended in the red. Though investors followed a sell-on-rise approach this week and booked profits at higher levels, it was not as aggressive enough for the index to give up the week's gains.

The BSE Sensex closed Friday's trading session at 80710.76 points, down 7.25 points. The mid- and small- cap indices also gained during the session, most of them closing in positive territory. The Nifty Smallcap 250 and the Nifty Midcap 100 closed 0.2% each.

Investors continued to favour automobile stocks in anticipation that the measures taken by the government favouring consumers, especially a cut in GST, will increase demand and consequently increase their sales volume. Most broking firms expect demand for small cars, which has had its sales slump in the recent quarters, to improve during Oct-Mar. Eicher Motors gained over 2% on Friday and emerged as the top gainer in the Nifty 50 index. Mahindra & Mahindra hit fresh record highs intraday and came off high to close at INR 3,561.30, up over 2%. The Nifty Auto gained for the third straight session and closed 1.3% higher Friday.

Meanwhile, information technology stocks fell on rumour that US President Donald Trump was mulling over imposing tariffs on Indian IT services. IT is among the few sectors on which the US has not imposed any tariff as of now. Bloomberg, which was quoted as the source of the IT tariff news by some reports and social media handles, denied any such reportage on the same. HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, and Infosys closed nearly 2% each. The Nifty IT index was the worst-hit and closed 1.4% lower. The index was down for the fourth straight session and has fallen 3% during the time.

Fast-moving consumer goods stocks traded lower through out the day. Nifty FMCG was also another worst hit sectoral index and closed 1.4%. ITC closed 2% lower and fell the most among the Nifty 50 constituents. Others such as Varun Beverages, Radico Khaitan, and Emami fell 2-4%. This comes after the sharp gains in FMCG stocks after Aug. 15 when the GST reforms were annnounced, as these companies stand to benefit the most out of it.
