MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan till Sunday as the well-marked low-pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over south Rajasthan. It also expects exceptionally heavy rainfall over parts of Gujarat on Saturday.

The weather bureau has issued red and orange alerts for parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan till Sunday. A red alert – the highest level of weather warning - indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours while an orange alert indicates rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.

So far in the southwest monsoon, this will be the second depression to form over Rajasthan, the fifth such depression since the southwest monsoon had hit the Kerala coast on May 26. The first depression that formed over Rajasthan was on Jul. 15.

There is also an upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat coast. Further, a trough runs from northeast Arabian Sea to northwest Bay of Bengal. These weather systems along with the well-marked low-pressure area are likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of west and northwest India till Sunday.

The weather bureau also said very heavy rainfall is likely over west Madhya Pradesh Friday. Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, Sikkim, and Chhattisgarh till mid-next week.  End
