MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the Gujarat region till Saturday and an orange alert in Saurashtra and Kutch for very heavy rainfall till Friday. However, the weather bureau updated the warning to a red alert on likely extremely heavy showers in Saurashtra and Kutch for Saturday and Sunday.

A red alert – the highest level of weather warning - indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours. An orange alert indicates rainfall exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the well-marked low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal, which moved over northern Chhattisgarh and eastern Madhya Pradesh, weakened to a low pressure area Thursday. The associated cyclonic circulation with the weather system is likely to move west northwestwards across eastern Madhya Pradesh in the next 24 hours.

Under the influence of above weather system, very heavy rainfall is likely over western Madhya Pradesh till Friday and for which the weather department has issued an orange alert in the region. Monsoon remains active over parts of western India and heavy rainfall is expected in Konkan, Goa, and central Maharashtra till Saturday.

In northwest India, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue in eastern Rajasthan till Sunday. The weather bureau also issued an orange alert in western Rajasthan till Friday and for the whole state on Saturday and Sunday.  End
