NEW DELHI – With an aim to make onions available to consumers at affordable prices, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi Thursday launched their retail sale at INR 24 per kg in Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. The sale will be carried out through mobile vans of National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd., National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd, and Kendriya Bhandar, a statement released by the ministry said.

The government has procured 300,000 tonnes of onion this year to sell in the market when prices of the commodity generally rise in the lean season between September and November. The government's objective is to control food inflation and maintain a stable price regime through calibrated and targeted disposal of onions from the buffer stock, the release said. The sales are also expected to provide relief to consumers, particularly in urban areas, it said.

India's onion production in crop year 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) is estimated at 30.8 million tonnes, 27% higher than the previous year. Exports, the government said, have been steady, with 106,000 tonnes exported in July and 109,000 tonnes in August.

The coverage of onion sales will be widened, deepened, intensified, and diversified across the country based on price trends, the government said.

India produces 28 million tonnes to 30 million tonnes of onion annually. The country is among the world's largest producers of the crop, with rabi onion accounting for nearly 75% of the country's total production. Last year, the government had procured as much as 470,000 tonnes of rabi onion for the price stabilisation buffer and started releasing the stock from Sept. 5 through subsidised retail and bulk sales in major mandis across the country. Currently, the all-India average retail price of onion is INR 28.4 per kg, down 42% from the previous year because of ample availability of the commodity.   End
