NEW DELHI – The commerce ministry, in a meeting with export promotion councils and industry associations on Wednesday, reaffirmed the government's commitment to safeguard the interests of Indian exporters after the US' 50% tariff on Indian goods kicked in last week. The meeting was chaired by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.

Goyal assured industry representatives that the government is actively engaged in creating an enabling environment to help exporters navigate the recent challenges. "He urged exporters to upgrade product quality, align with global standards, diversify supply chains, and explore alternate markets," the commerce ministry said in a release. "There was a broad consensus on the need for alternative mechanisms, with the government committed to addressing sectoral concerns and driving sustained export growth."

Around 55% of India's exports to the US are now subject to 50% tariff, as the White House has exempted pharmaceuticals, energy, and electronics from the additional tariffs. The extra duty poses a risk to nearly $50 billion worth of Indian goods to the US from labour-intensive sectors such as chemicals and fertilisers, textile and apparel, gems and jewellery, shrimp and seafood, furniture and beddings, and machinery and mechanical appliances.

In 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), India exported $86.51 billion worth of goods to the US and had a trade surplus of $40.82 billion.  End

US$1 = INR 88.07
