India receives 48% above-normal rainfall in week to Wed, highest this season

MUMBAI – India received 48% above-normal rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, the highest in the entire southwest monsoon season so far, according to the India Meteorological Department. Rainfall over the country was sharply above normal for the third consecutive week.
During the week ended Wednesday, the country received average rainfall of 72.5 millimetres, 48% above the normal of 49.0 millimetres for the week, according to the weather bureau. Average rainfall for the country improved as south India and northwest India received excess rainfall during the week.
Also, 38% of the country's total area recorded "large excess" showers during the week. Of the nine subdivisions in northwest India, eight recorded "large excess" showers during the week. Similarly, eight of the 10 subdivisions in south India received "excess" to "large excess" showers.
Rainfall was 73% above normal in southern peninsular India at 63.3 millimetres and a whopping 182% above normal in northwest India at 95.9 millimetres during the week, data from the weather bureau showed. The rainfall was 11% above normal in central India at 69 millimetres. But east and northeast India recorded 29% below normal at 46.1 millimetres.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in 14, of which five were from the southern peninsula and eight from northwest India. Eight subdivisions recorded "excess" rains, nine recorded "normal" showers, three received "deficient" and two subdivisions received "large deficient" rainfall during the week. Since Jun. 1, the country has received 780.8 millimetres of rain, 8% above the normal of 721.1 millimetres, as per the data.
