MUMBAI – Investors turned bearish towards Indian equities by the end of session, making the benchmark indices close Tuesday's session in the red. Analysts had projected a "sell on rise" movement for the benchmark indices post the market's knee-jerk reaction towards India's June quarter GDP coming in at a five-quarter high. The steeper 50% duty on imports from India in the US and the strained relations between the countries are dulling sentiment, even when experts say India can take the impact on its economy.

The Nifty 50 closed at 24579.60 points, down 45.45 points or 0.2%. Gains in index heavyweight Reliance Industries were offset by decline in HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank. The BSE Sensex closed at 80157.88 points, down 206.61 points or 0.3%. Broader market indices closed higher, outperforming benchmark indices. The broader Smallcap 250 gained 0.6% and the Nifty Midcap 150 was up 0.2%. Fast-moving consumer durables continued to interest investors, while banks and financial services stocks hit a weak spot.

Analysts said investors will likely look at sectors that are driven by domestic market such as fast-moving consumer goods, consumer durables, and automobiles. Investors would likely be hesitant to make huge bets on export-related companies due to supply chain risks, especially amid US' trade policies. Further, it is expected that the GST Council accepting the proposed GST rationalisation measures by the government in the meeting ending Thursday will set off some gains to the market.

Investors sold shares of private banks and financial services companies. Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, and HDFC Bank closed 0.6-1.3% lower. Shriram Finance and Jio Financial Services ended 0.6% and 0.7% lower, respectively. Some pharmaceutical stocks also fell, with large-cap Dr Reddy's Laboratories closing down 2% and being among the weak-performer of the Nifty 50 index.

Sugar companies were in focus Tuesday after the government removed quantitative limits on ethanol production for sugar mills and distilleries during the supply year 2025-26 (Nov-Oct). India's gross sugar production is likely to grow 18.3% on year to 34.9 million tonnes in the 2025-26 sugar season, as per preliminary estimates of Indian Sugar Mills & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association. Shree Renuka Sugars, Praj Industries, and Balrampur Chini Mills gained 5-13% following the announcement.

Meanwhile, the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association, a representative body of six large tyre companies in India that accounts for over 90% of tyre production, has sought for a tax rate of 5% on tyres, compared with the existing 28%. Tractor tyres and aircraft tyres are taxed at 18% and 5%, respectively. Tyre-makers gained in the session, with MRF, JK Tyre & Industries, and CEAT ending 5-6% higher.
