MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department Tuesday said the low pressure area formed over northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to become well marked over the same region in next 24 hours. This is likely to bring another spell of heavy showers in parts of east, central, and west india.
The low-pressure area formed over northwest Bay of Bengal early Tuesday is expected to move west-northwestwards across Odisha in the next 24 hours. This is likely to cause extremely heavy rainfall over Odisha and Chhattisgarh on Tuesday and a red alert has been issued in these states, the weather bureau said. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
The weather bureau also said very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of east and central India till Thursday, with heavy rainfall over more parts in the region during the week. The weather system over the Bay of Bengal also led to active westerlies, which are causing very heavy rainfall over parts of west India. The meteorological department has also said extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Gujarat region on Thursday and Friday and over parts of Saurashtra and Kutch on Saturday and Sunday.
An orange alert has been issued in nine sub-divisions in west, central, and east India Wednesday due to very heavy rainfall. An orange alert is for rainfall forecast exceeding 115.6 millimetres and going up to 204.4 millimetres within 24 hours.
The weather department also said there is an upper air cyclonic circulation over south Haryana and its neighbourhood and a western disturbance over Pakistan adjoining the northwest India. These weather systems along with a trough connecting Kashmir and northwest Madhya Pradesh are likely to cause extremely heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand Tuesday. The weather department has issued a red alert in these two states.
Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of northwest India along with very heavy rainfall over parts of Jammu, Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, west Rajasthan, and east Rajasthan during the week. End
