MUMBAI – The government has set a rice procurement target of 46.35 million tonnes for the kharif marketing year 2025-26 (Oct-Sept), the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution said in a press release on Monday. This is lower than the procurement target of 48.5 million tonnes for the 2024-25 kharif marketing year.
The target for procurement of coarse grains, promoted as 'Shri Anna' by the government, is fixed at 1.919 million tonnes for the 2025-26 kharif marketing season, the release said. States have been advised to focus on procurement of millers for diversification of crops and enhanced nutrition in dietary patterns, the release said.
The procurement targets for grains were set after a meeting with food secretaries of states and the Food Corp. of India, chaired by Sanjeev Chopra, secretary in the Department of Food and Public Distribution. "During the meeting, details regarding rice milling transformation scheme were shared wherein custom milling of rice with only 10% broken is to be undertaken," the release said. End
