--Maruti Suzuki Aug total production 158,202 units vs 168,953 units year ago

NEW DELHI - The total production of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., the largest automobile maker in the country, fell 6.4% on year to 158,202 units in August, the company said in a stock exchange filing Monday. This was largely on account of a 15% on-year fall in the production of high-priced special utility vehicles Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Jimny, XL6, and other models to 58,587 units.

The mini passenger vehicles sub-segment of the company, comprising S-Presso and Alto, recorded a production volume fall of 11% on year at 9,485 units. On the other hand, there was an on-year increase in the production volume of passenger cars in the compact sub-segment comprising models such as Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR. Maruti Suzuki produced 75,923 units of these models in August, higher by 3.8% from a year ago.

Production of vans by the company declined 4.7% on year to 11,243 units in August, while production of light commercial vehicles fell 6.5% to 2,964 units. The company said its production volume data included production by Suzuki Motor Gujarat Pvt. Ltd.

Earlier on Monday, Maruti Suzuki had said in a separate stock exchange filing that its total sales were at 180,663 units in August, down 0.6% on year. This was primarily due to a 14?ll in sales of the high-priced special utility vehicles at 54,043 units. The company reported a substantial fall of 36% on year in sales of mini sub-segment passenger vehicles at 6,853 units.

Shares of the company closed at INR 14,887 Monday, up 0.7%, on the National Stock Exchange.  End
