MUMBAI – India' headline indices rebounded Monday to close higher after three continous sessions of decline due to a surprise surge in India's GDP growth to a five-quarter high of 7.8% during Apr-Jun. However, analysts see the recovery as temporary and shrugged it off as a knee-jerk reaction towards the positive economic data as fundamentally 'everything remains same'. The GST rejig meeting starting Wednesday, which will likely provide relief from such taxes to boost demand, has also impacted market positively, analysts said.
The Nifty 50 closed at 24625.05 points, up 198.20 points or 0.8%. The 50-stock index was 6.3% lower than the life-time high of 26277.35 points. Analysts had expected the Nifty 50 to cross 25000 points and sustain above it by the end of August. But that has not been the case amid weak demand, tariff-related uncertainties delaying purchase from the consumers, persistent selling pressure from foregin investors, and recently the falling rupee. The BSE Sensex closed at 80364.49 points, up 554.84 points or 0.7%.
"Expectations of GST rationalisation at the upcoming council meeting continue to bolster sentiment, supporting discretionary consumption," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments Ltd., said in a note. "This optimism is particularly benefiting sectors such as Auto and Consumer Durables," he added.
Automobile and consumer durable stocks surged on Monday with their respective sectoral indices--Nifty Auto and Nifty Consumer Durables--emerging as top gainers on the back of anticipation of cuts in GST soon. Analysts said if the government manages to implement the proposed two-slab system for taxing, this would definitely encourage consumer spending. That said there are also concern about the government finances, which is set to bear the brunt of the shortfall in the GST collection, and widening fiscal deficit. "However, the risk of a potential revenue shortfall from proposed GST slab adjustments has heightened concerns over increased government borrowing, pushing domestic bond yields higher," Nair of Geojit said.
Automobile shares were in focus Monday as most of the companies declared their wholesale sales numbers for August. Most of the companies reported a growth in their overall sales to dealerships. Mahindra & Mahindra's passenger vehicle sales contracted for the first time since January 2022 and India two-wheeler wholesale sales of Bajaj Auto fell for the third straight month. Meanwhile, automobile despatches of TVS Motor India hit record high in August and sales of Escorts Kubota improved on the back of favourable rural conditions. All the 15 stocks in the Nifty Auto index closed higher. Large-caps such as Bajaj Auto, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, and Hero MotoCorp were the also the most bought among the Nifty Auto constituents.
Nifty Pharma and Nifty Media were the worst-hit on Monday. The Nifty Media closed 0.3% lower ay 1,606 points, mainly dragged down by Zee Entertainment Enterprises and Hathway Cable & Datacom. The Nifty Pharma ended 0.1% lower as traders shed shares of Aun Pharmaceutical Industries and Ajanta Pharma.
