NEW DELHI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s wholesale sales declined marginally on year in August as the country's largest passenger vehicle maker's utility vehicle sales fell for the third consecutive month, according to its exchange filing Monday. While sales of bigger cars have taken a turn for the worse recently, smaller variants are not showing any signs of recovery. The company's exports, however, continued to go from strength to strength, driven by robust demand in multiple markets, including Japan, South Africa, and West Asia.

 

The Alto-maker sold 131,278 passenger vehicles in India in August, down over 8% on year and nearly 5% on month. Of these, wholesale sales of its mini and compact segment fell over 3% on year and over 8% on month to 66,450 units.

 

Sales of mini cars Alto and S-Presso remained flat on month but fell 36% on year to 6,853 units in August. Compact cars, such as Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR, registered sales growth of 3% on year, but fell over 9% on month to 59,597 units. The company sold zero Ciaz sedans in August. A year ago, it had sold 707 Ciaz sedans.

 

Utility vehicles, which contribute over 40% to Maruti Suzuki's domestic passenger vehicle sales, fell nearly 14% on year but grew 2% on month to 54,043 units. Maruti Suzuki's utility vehicles portfolio comprises Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, and XL6.

 

The company despatched 10,785 Eeco vans in August, down 1.8% on year and a sharper 13% on month.

 

Maruti Suzuki's export sales grew over 40% on year but a slower 15% on month to 36,538 units in August. This is the fastest year-on-year exports growth registered by the company in the past three months.

 

Sales of Maruti Suzuki's Super Carry commercial vehicles grew 11% on year to 2,772 units. Sales to other original equipment manufacturers fell just over 1% to 10,095 units. Maruti Suzuki's total domestic sales in August fell over 7% on year to 144,145 units.

 

FIVE-MONTH SHOW

In the first five months of the current financial year, Maruti Suzuki despatched 889,070 automobile units to dealerships in India and abroad, up just over 1% from a year ago. Overall domestic sales, including sales of its passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, and sales to other carmakers, fell nearly 5% on year to 723,815 units. In the same period, the company exported 165,255 units, up over 37% on year. 

 

Sales of Maruti Suzuki's mini cars in Apr-Aug fell over 35% on year to 33,197 units. Compact car sales fell just around 1% to 302,534 units in these five months. Sales of utility vehicles in Apr-Aug fell nearly 5% on year to 268,684 units while sales of vans fell nearly 1% to 56,231 units. 
 

For the June quarter, Maruti Suzuki's net profit stood at INR 37.12 billion on a revenue of INR 384.14 billion. Monday, its shares closed 0.7% higher on the National Stock Exchange at INR 14,887 apiece.  End
