MUMBAI - A low pressure area is likely to form over the northern Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours under the influence of an upper air circulation, the India Meteorological Department said. This is likely to cause heavy spells of rain over parts of east and central India, it said.
The weather bureau also said there is a trough running from the cyclonic circulation to north Odisha, which is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh during the week. A spell of heavy rainfall is also likely over several parts of east and central India till Saurday, the weather agency said.
There is another upper air cyclonic circulation over northwest Rajasthan and adjoining areas, the weather bureau said. A trough runs from the circulation up to Jharkhand, the department said. These weather systems are expected to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of northwest India till Saturday, it said.
Isolated very heavy rainfall is expected over Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh Tuesday and Wednesday. Regions of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, and east Rajasthan are expected to experience very heavy rainfall till Tuesday, the department said.
A red alert has been issued for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till Tuesday for extremely heavy rainfall. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
Extremely heavy rainfall is "very likely" over isolated places in the Gujarat region Thursday and Friday. Very heavy rainfall is also likely over the Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, and Gujarat regions from Wednesday to Saturday, and over Saurashtra and Kutch during the weekend, the weather agency said.
