--M&M: Co cut wholesale billing to reduce dealer stock ahead of tax cut

NEW DELHI – Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s passenger vehicle segment, which exclusively comprises sport utility vehicles, saw sales fall year-on-year in August, the first time this has happened after January 2022, according to the company's exchange filing Monday. The Thar-maker said it pulled back the supply of inventory to dealerships consciously, ahead of anticipated tax cuts.

M&M sold 39,399 utility vehicles in August, nearly 9?wer than it did last year. This is the lowest number of passenger vehicles sold by M&M since December 2023, when it had sold 35,174 units.

However, its Vahan registrations improved by over 7% last month. "With the final GST (goods and services tax) announcement approaching, we consciously decided to bring down the wholesale billing to minimise the stock being carried by our dealers. We look forward to the GST rationalisation, which would be a demand driver through the festive season," the company said in a statement.

M&M despatched 22,427 commercial vehicles in August. Of these, sales of light commercial vehicles with a payload below 2 tonnes contracted by 1% to 2,925 units. Sales of light commercial vehicles with payloads between 2 tonnes and 3.5 tonnes grew 13% on year to 19,502 units. Vahan registrations of the company's commercial vehicles grew 16% on year. Sales of three-wheelers, including electric variants, grew 13% on year to 10,527 units.

The company's exports grew 16% to 3,548 units in August. Overall, the company sold 75,901 automobile units in August, largely flat on year.

In the year started Apr. 1, the company has sold 241,337 passenger vehicles in India, up 15% on year. Sales of commercial vehicles since April have grown over 6% from a year ago to 104,330 units. Wholesale sales of three-wheelers in this period have grown 33% on year to 40,561 units. Exports in Apr-Aug have grown 37% on year to 15,989 units.

FARM BUSINESS

M&M sold 26,201 tractors in August in India, 28% higher than 20,518 units sold in the same month a year ago. It exported 1,916 units, up 37% on year. Overall, M&M's tractor sales last month grew 28% on year to 28,117 units.

"The above-normal monsoon and improved reservoir levels augur well not only for Kharif crops but also for the upcoming Rabi season in October," the company said in a statement. "While the IMD's (India Meteorological Department's) forecast of surplus rainfall in September--especially in certain pockets--may pose risks to Kharif harvests, it needs to be managed with caution. All these factors, along with continued government support through financing schemes for farmers, could potentially drive tractor demand during the upcoming festive season."

In Apr-Aug, the company despatched 190,914 tractors to dealerships, 12% higher than it did last year.

For the June quarter, Mahindra & Mahindra had reported a consolidated net profit of INR 34.50 billion on a revenue of INR 341.43 billion. At 1519 IST, the company's shares were nearly 4% higher at INR 3,315.50 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
